With all this speculation on why Baum sang so much and was so lousy, I'm wondering why Alagna and Giordani and Hampson are doing so much at the Met in recent and current seasons with their diminished voices, while there are competent singers virtually unused.

Subject: Kurt Baum

This is interesting reading. It is an interview with Kurt Baum that
appeared in the LA Times a few years before his death. He talks about
Callas and Milanov and its not what you might expect. It confirms that
Baum was probably born in 1898 or 1899. He also comes off as a gentlemanly
kind of guy. Actually, I have been told by older singes and opera people
in New York who knew him well that off stage he was a very nice man. He
also doesn't trash his colleagues in this article.
