I have been listening to a wonderful live recording, in really excellent sound, of the 1966
American Opera Society concert presentation of "Anna Bolena" at Carnegie Hall. It was Elena
Suliotis' New York debut and also featured Marilyn Horne, Placido Domingo, Carlo Cava, and
as Smeaton, Janet Baker (also making her NY debut - talk about luxury casting!). It is an
exciting performance. Suliotis is wildly uneven, as she usually was, but this was before she
began to crash and burn, vocally, and at her best she delivers some spectacularly beautiful
singing and some exciting, gutsy chest register of a sort one does not hear these days, along
with lots of personality. Anna's opening aria and the duet with Horne are among the best I've
ever heard. (Unfortunately, she really flubs the final notes, which ends the evening on a
damper.) Domingo, just a babe in arms then, is wonderful, as is Horne. Cava is OK - gets
the job done. Henry Lewis conducts.

I have heard about this performance for a long time but had never heard it until now. It's a
winner! Surely some old time listers were there and can provide some memories and
comments.

Zem were the days!
