I'm surprised that no one has alluded to Shirley Verrett. She sang both Ulrica and Amelia in
"Ballo"; both Norma and Adalgisa in "Norma"; both Amneris and Aida in "Aida"; both roles in
"Les Troyens" on the that famous Met evening in 1974; Verrett had a massive stage
repertoire as did Grace Bumbry, who probably covered the same territory. Yet both sang
Dalila, Carmen, Eboli, Azucena, Lady Macbeth, etc.
Amazingly, they both sang all of these roles during the same times during their
respective careers -------- and they were very "hot" and exciting". Loved them both.
