Last night, about 100 folks gathered at the historic Dacor-Bacon House for cocktails/hor's d'oevres, a concert and then a dinner to salute many special people. The In Series began the Fidelio Awards this year and several were bestowed but pianist Carlos Cesar Rodriguez and tenor, Peter Burroughs, who are two longtime friends of ours, and stalwarts of the In Series for so many years, were especially meaningful to us.

Elizabeth Mondragon sang "El pano moruno" by de Falla and later returned for a thrillingly funny "Oh, what a Movie! from Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti. Alex Albuquerque started with the Largo al factotum from Barbiere filling the room with his huge baritone as he wandered through the crowd waving to everyone. then later joined Randa Rouweyha in Magic Flutes "Bei Mannern..." but only after starting with a thrilling "Ah fors'e lui...Sempre Libera" from Traviata first.

A huge highlight was tenor Joseph Haughton's "Oh this barren cell" an English lyric by Nick Olcott from Beethoven's Fidelio which the company performed so well last spring.

The program ended with American favorites:
Ellington's "In a Sentimental Mood" by Ms. Rouweyha

"In the Still of the Night" by Porter sing by Mr. Haughton and then

Gershwin's "Our Love is Here to Stay."

Pianist Frank Conlon was, as always, an amazing partner.

As if this was not enough, while we dined, pianist Mari Paz and Mr. Albuqeurque started tossing off some Spanish songs for the crowd.

What a fun night had by all, but ended on a bittersweet note with Artistic Director Carla Hubner's announcement that she will step down in one year's time at the end of the next season, which was also announced and will include

Magic Flute (Sept 23-20)

Jacques Brel Remembered (Nov 4-19_

Operetta Holiday(Dec 6-12)

Jerome Kern Cabaret (Jan 20- Feb 4,2018)

Maria La O/Cecila Valdes Zarzuela (Apr 18-29)

The Emperor of Atlantis (June 9-17) which I am truly excited to finally get to see!!

ALAN SAVADA of Washington, DC
