It was wonderfully produced, with interesting news reel footage,
interviews, fotos, and the "sets" were largely projections, imaginatively
accomplished. Kudos.

Best moment: the unexpected appearance of Dmitri Hvorostovsky, to sing the
Rigoletto aria.

Other great moments: Nebs as Cio-Cio-San, Meade in the Lombardi and
Camarena in Fille.

Pleasant surprise: James Morris as the Grand Inquisitor

What we didn't need to hear:

The Thais duet, preceded by the slowest, dullest Porgi, amor since Mozart
was alive
Ms. Damrau again as Violetta
Mr. Lucic as Iago
Bel raggio: pretty, but no umph....and one unwise note.

What we didn't hear:
no Wagner other than the Tannhauser arrival of the guests
not a note of Strauss

If we are celebrating a "hall" perhaps having Amber Wagner sing "Dich,
teure halle" might have made some sense.

Mr. Owens sounded better than he did Thursday night in the Beethoven 9th,
but that's not saying much and that duet was so slow...

But in all a satisfying evening....
