Subject: Peggy Noonan on the Importance of Opera

text/plain (26 lines)

From Peggy Noonan's WSJ column today on the President's proposed tax reform plan:

"Refusing to eliminate the deduction for [charitable contributions] was I suspect the work of
the New Yorkers in the White House. Opera, ballet and theater all come out of New York,
home too of the greatest museums and libraries. If the charitable deduction goes away, their
contributions go down. If the greatest opera goes down in New York, that art form no longer
exists in America. And a great nation must have opera."

Ms. Noonan apparently hasn't heard about the operas in Chicago, San Francisco, Houston,
Dallas, etc. Still, it's always nice to see opera defended as an essential cultural element,
given how rare that has become. "A great nation must have opera." Indeed.
