Ludwig did indeed say the "quote"  in an interview in German.

Not saying this is the case with her, but there are singers who are very 
great artists in their own performance, who have remarkably little 
appreciation or insight for the art form as a whole.

Also, some wonderful singers who project luminous character qualities in 
their roles onstage can be starkly devoid of such in real life.

I keep remembering the 40 year old movie "Autumn Sonata" in which Ingrid 
Bergman played a famous concert pianist and Liv Ullman was her daughter who 
always got the short end of the stick. After things have boiled over into a 
harsh confrontation in which the Ullman character lets the Bergman one have 
it with what a completely oblivious self centered person and crappy mother 
she is, Bergman is riding home on a train muttering how the critics had 
always praised the humanity and generosity of her interpretations.
