Metropolitan Opera, New York

 	+Fidelio+ returned to the Met on Thursday in Jürgen Flimm’s quirky
production, first seen in 2000. As designed by Robert Israel, it toys with
modernist clichés, then stubbornly falls back on operatic realism. Narrative
logic in this context becomes a sometime thing.

 	A crucial message greets viewers via words projected on a prim
scrim: “Wahre Liebe fuerchtet nicht.” Although no translation is provided,
we know this means “True love knows no fear.” Ah, so.

 	The stage is decorated – term used advisedly – with a wall housing
three tiers of barred prison cells. When not observing what passes for drama
through the bars, the inmates temporarily descend on stage on cue, without
benefit of stairs. Since all the business takes place in the same crowded
area, the players are required to execute endless busy-work, apparently in
an effort to spare them, and us, potential boredom. No such luck.

 	In general, the ensemble looked better than it sounded.  At least
everyone gesticulated with gusto.

 	Adrianne Pieczonka enacted the title role urgently and sang it
stridently. Marzelline, portrayed by the pretty – and pretty uneven –
Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, spent much of her time fussing with utensils on a
dining table. At the end, she mimed an unwritten mad-scene, complete with
discarded roses. Klaus Florian Vogt strangled and whispered his desperate
lines as Florestan. He also did a lot of stumbling about a huge pile of
suitcases; ask not why. His hard working colleagues included Falk Struckmann
as a crusty old Rocco, Greer Grimsley as a stock-mean Pizarro, Günther
Groissboeck as a dignified deus minus machina, and David Portillo as a
pistol-packing tenorino Jaquino.

 	Sebastian Weigle, Generalmusikdirektor in Frankfurt, did his best to
balance momentum and accuracy in the pit. He succeeded some of the time.
