It's a myth that Fanciulla was particularly hard for Price's voice and led directly to her vocal crisis.

Her first performance was greeted with laudatory reviews in the newspapers. Certainly, her voice gave out in the second performance. Price was particularly embarrassed because there were some star singers in the audience. After a vocal rest, however, as was pointed out on this thread already, she came back and sang Fanciulla again at the MET and sang it again on the MET tour.

It was likely the punishing schedule of opera and recitals she had that season that came to a head with the Fanciulla performances. She dropped the role, of course but she did that constantly with roles she didn't love or weren't perfect for her voice.

Either way, hers is the most glorious voice I've ever experienced.

Very sad that there isn't a scholarly biography (or autobiography) of Price. Soon after her retirement, she kept promising that she was writing an autobiography, but, decades have gone by with nothing.
