Trump's new immigration restriction is much more disastrous for the performing
arts that anyone now understands. It will take effect on March 16 and, according
to, “potentially affects all foreign artists coming to the US,
from students/young artists to competition and festival participants.” The VIWP
(Visa Interview Waiver Program) for non-immigrants has also been suspended. “All
artists will be required to have a personal interview in order to receive a new visa,
regardless of when their last O or P visa was issued or whether or not they were
previously allowed to receive a visa under the VIWP.” Consular or embassy staffing,
of course, will not be in place and one can only wonder about interview wait times
and visa processing in general. These were already big problems for visiting artists
under the present system. Anyone coming to America for any unpaid musical
activity and think that a tourist visa might work are advised to take snacks
because you will certainly be detained and likely denied entry.
The new regulations will certainly dramatically increase the time and effort needed
to perform in the US and we will only learn in the coming weeks and months how
this will affect non-US singers scheduled to appear at any time after the 16th. The
Met will soon be announcing further cast changes.
