(G.R.) I would have to disagree. Granted, the fact that few 
Alfredos seem to mine everything in the role remains a 
source of frustration to certain Verdi admirers. But that is 
not Verdi's fault, IMO. In Fabiano's welcome fusion of 
sorrow with anger in the Flora scene, he finds a depth 
there which all too few Alfredos achieve. It helps us 
connect Verdi's inspiration here with a tradition going 
back to confrontational sequences like Edgardo in the 
Lucia wedding scene, to Ottavio confronting Giovanni at 
the Act I party, to Bajazet confronting Tamerlano, and 
beyond.
