Kaufmann will end up as a bass (as Vinay did) if his voice keeps darkening .

There have been a few times, when I was not watching the TV when Kaufman was singing, that I thought I was hearing a baritone voice. I am probably wrong, but I am inclined to think that Kaufman has taken on too many heavy roles, too soon. Hopefully, I am wrong.

Are my ears deceiving me? (It wouldn't be the first time). But what I was hearing was a distinctly baritone voice in the role of Chenier today. I have never heard Kauffmann sound so very deep before. I felt the audience was being polite in their reception to him. He usually gets resounding applause.
I thought Harteros did a fine job of Maddalena and Salsi's interpretation of Gerard was also top notch. Sounds like the audience gave them their fair share of appreciation.
This is one astounding opera that really grabs you and doesn't let go.
Bravo, Giordano.
