I think the opera paints him as something of a rube. Also narcissism was not such a big deal in thinking back then. But his actions are entitled. And yes, they are the same selfish ones of a Japanese man.
Japanese housewives were grumps and geishas were trained in socializing. So Butterfly is a bit thin in the real geisha attributes, by the way.

They are big time facilitators and founts of cultural knowledge. I had a big kahuna geisha as a friend. Butterfly is a western
Male fantasy geisha. She is a newly minted baby geisha.
