Clémentine Margaine will make her Met debut in the title role of Bizet’s
Carmen this Thursday, January 19, and will sing the role in all
performances of the opera at the Met this season. The French
mezzo-soprano, who was to make her company debut in the role later this
season, replaces the originally announced Sophie Koch, who has withdrawn
from her scheduled performances due to illness.

Margaine has sung Carmen with numerous leading opera companies around the
world, including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Rome
Opera, Opera Australia, Washington Opera, and the Canadian Opera Company.
Her notable roles with other companies have included Dalila in
Saint-Saëns’s Samson et Dalila, Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Frederica
in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, and Anna in Berlioz’s Les Troyens at Deutsche
Oper Berlin; Dulcinée in Massenet’s Don Quichotte at the Lyric Opera of
Chicago; and Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther at the Teatro Colón in Buenos
Aires. Later this season, she will sing Carmen at the Dresden State Opera
and Paris Opera, as well as Sara in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux at the
Bavarian State Opera.
