I remember a few years ago the discussion of contracts for workers at the Met.
Stagehands get six figure incomes (something unimaginable in Europe) and are
not paid per performance. Was the orchestra the same? What cancellation would
save in a season is not all that clear since the Met is a shareholder in the
production and certainly has already contributed advanced sums. Stagehands will
get their regular salaries for only the little effort setting up the chairs for the
Requiem but the Met might save in the usual overtime payments. They will
certainly have to negotiate with contracted singer's agents over the cancellation.
Gelb is always faced with fixed costs which do not change much if there is a
concert performance or if the hall is dark. Seats are unsold but he faces
approximately the same fixed costs if the number of performances were reduced or
the season shortened. What is more worrisome is that, in the old days, Bing would
just call up a donor friend, drop by to pick up the check.

Suddenly a million bucks is critical to the operation? Many of us remember the old
days when a million dollars would miraculously change your life in every way.
Today, it just might pay off the mortgage and buy you a mid-price weekend in the
Bahamas. The board should have been able to pass the hat.
