Agree with your assessment.  I was not surprised to hear in the post 
performance interview with the composer that he had done very little vocal 
composition.  That was my main complaint about the work.  Voice seems to 
be a second thought for many opera commissions.  (IMHO the Met should 
have dumped the Ades opera -- he writes like he doesn't like singers and I 
do not enjoy that at all).  There was a very interesting potential opera in 
BEL CANTO, dramatically and musically, but that was not it, again IMHO.
