Sorry to all the Pollyanna's out there, but this is what happens when you 
have incompetent leadership at the top of the organization, supported by an 
enabling board.  Peter Gelb's true legacy appears to be his opera-in-theater 
innovation, but beyond that he seems to be driving the Met into the most 
dire of situations.

Yes, he may have discovered Beito's opera not to his liking, but this comes 
after all the other truly wretched productions he has already sanctioned?

He has to downsize the number of new productions he approves because of 
finances after he touted that new productions were needed to bring in new 

And the people he selects for the opera--the frequent use of "house tenors" 
over internationally known ones--makes one suspect he really doesn't 
understand vocalism.

He has had his chance to make the Met over in his own image;  the results is 
a series of disasters that can be traced directly to his decision-making. 
(And no, it's not the economy in general, considering Broadway is having a 
boffo year.  It's Gelb and his egotistical approach to running the
