Along with the great news that Bryn Terfel has been Knighted, and that Dame Evelyn Glennie and Sir Richard Eyre have been appointed to the Order of the Companions of Honour, in the 2017 Queen's New Year's Honours list, the (imho) very long-overdue Knighthood of the great conductor, Jeffrey Tate, has finally come.
If anyone represented British music and musical talent to the world in the most exemplary fashion for nearly 50 years, it is/has been now Sir Jeffrey Tate, doing so through physical challenges, having studied first to be a medical doctor, and then giving himself to conducting for all of the long years of his professional career.
I met Maestro Tate a number of times in the 1980s when he conducted at the Metropolitan Opera, and he was always very charming.
Bravi to all of the awardees, but a special word of appreciation for this honour for Sir Jeffrey.
Opera singer Bryn Terfel given a knighthood, Dame Evelyn Glennie made a Companion of Honour and Iestyn Davies given an MBE in the New Year’s Honours 2017
