Make no mistake, Marilyn Horne's was one of the most spectacular voices
I've had the pleasure of hearing live on many occasions. The still
unmistakable velvet nap of her timbre, the "in your face" delivery when
she was in her "General Horne" mode, phenomenal musicianship, hair-raising
agility able to keep pace with Sutherland - surely one of the
most astounding technicians in the history of singing - yet she never quite
carried in a big house as she did on records or in concerts. Her Fides and
Amneris at the MET were more thrilling in broadcast than they were from my
seat, though her Rinaldo, Arsace, Isabella, Rosina, Tancredi (Chicago) and
Orlando (Chicago) secured the legend in house, with those memories now
 confirmed by recordings.
