Correction I didn't realize until after dinner - long day at work - Mattei was Amfortas, the Gurnemanz was Pape. Both were great. Production still odd.

Subject: Re: Fwd: Metropolitan Opera Cast Change Advisory - Eugene Onegin

Mattei has also sung Yeletsky in The Queen Of Spades, splendidly, at the Met in 2011, and
probably elsewhere. So he's certainly no stranger to singing Tchaikowsky. (I remember a
broadcast where he was asked about his approach to that gorgeous Act II aria, and he
talked about the importance of the *lyrics* as much as the music. This from a man who is
certainly not at all a native Russian singer, but who clearly cared about the meaning of the
text as much as he might if *was* a Russian native. I loved that.)

I've enjoyed him every time I've heard him.

I am so saddened as well about Hvor's condition. But I am heartened that he is not giving
up his career entirely. More pwer to him, and hopes that he will be able to recover to the
point where stage roles are in his grasp again.
