Ah, I expected Ferber to be on the Pulitzer Prize list. Like Mitchell, popular, and a darn good storyteller. Ellen Glasgow's Barren Ground is so much better, pretty much her magnum opus. I am surprised to see a late Upton Sinclair on the list. After the detailed density of The Jungle which is a bizarre combination of journalistic reporting, grand guignol and socialist propaganda, where can one go? 

Regarding GWTW, I've always wanted to be a "great lady" like Melanie or Ellen, but I am not wealthy enough to be one, alas.
