Bill may be correct about Scmidt and Stader insofar they seldom
performed on stage. This, however. had nothing to do with their vocal
accomplishments, but with their diminutive physical stature. Stader was
4 ft 9 inch (144 cm), and Schmidt 4 ft 11 inch, (150 cm.) which made
stage careers almost impossible for both. They however had impressive
careers as recording and radio artists. Stader was a capital oratorio
singer, excelling in Bach, and also very successful in concert. Schmidt
was a Jew, and that did hamper his career in the late 30ies and early
40ies, and as he died in 1942 he did not get to record anything with
modern technology. Stader's Elvira in the Fricsay recording is a joy,
as is her Countess under the same conductor.
