Friends,
Here the Sirius listings for Thanksgiving Week, November 21-November 27,
2016. The repertory selected is quite satisfying as Puccini is left to the
current season Manon Lescaut on Monday and La Boheme. For my money the
best two historical operas are the 1940 Ballo in Maschera with Milanov and
Bjorling under the brilliant conducting of Ettore Panizza. No HD quad
sound, but what a performance.
Milanov has 8 broadcast Amelias starting with this one , then 4 more but
with Peerce, and then one each with Tucker and Peerce; for Bjorling this is
his only broadcast Gustavo/ Riccardo. The second *****
performance is the 1963 Fliegende Hollander with the magical combination
of Bohm in the pit and Rysanek with London. Bohm does not appear until
the second broadcast of Rysanek with London, and her remaining two
broadcasts with Bohm are done with David Ward in 1965 and William Dooley
in 1970. Luckily there is also a studio with Rysanek and London, but
Dorati is not a patch on Bohm in this music.
A very happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and as always Happy Listening.

Bellini: Norma *Mon Nov 21 12:00 am* 4/4/1970-Bonynge; Sutherland, Horne,
Bergonzi, Siepi

Picker: An American Tragedy *Mon Nov 21 6:00 am* 12/24/2005-Conlon; Gunn,
Racette, Graham, Zajick, Larmore
*Rebroadcast: *Wed Nov 23 3:00 pm , Fri Nov 25 9:00 pm

Last on Sirius: June 2016 Available on Met Opera on
Demand (MOoD) Annotation from January 2016

An American Tragedy was premiered at the Met and should have been HDd
during a scheduled revival in 2008 which was taken by Last Emperor (in
hopes of a China tour which did not materialize). Zambello directed,
and she remains faithful to the work which was revived at Glimmerglass
in 2014
in a revised edition. On the radio the real standout is Zajick who
makes conventional lines sound momentous, but the overall cast was
well chosen.

Donizetti: L'Elisir d'Amore  *Mon Nov 21 9:00 am*  3/18/1978-Caldwell;
Pavarotti, Blegen, Corena, Sereni
*Rebroadcast: *Sat Nov 26 3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from
August 2015

My memory of Caldwell's conducting (her Met farewell) is not so
positive; this is the second of three Blegen/Pavarotti Elisirs. For
me Sereni and Corena, especially Corena have never been replaced in
these roles. Corena's near monopoly of Dr. Dulcamara is totally
deserved. It is
just a shame that there are not more video representations of his very
considerable art. A particular word of praise for Sereni, whose
recent passing reminds us of what a reliable artist he was. The best
Elisir for my money is the all Italian one from 1972 with Scotto,
Bergonzi, Sereni, and Corena (on MOoD); there
is an earlier broadcast (1966) which is on MOoD and Sony CD which
substitutes Peters and Guarrera under Schippers for Scotto and
Sereni. MOoD covers all this ground plus a fine broadcast with Peters
and Kraus from 1968 with again Sereni and Corena.

Mozart: Cosi fan tutte  *Mon Nov 21 12:00 pm*  1/28/2006-Levine;
Deshorties, Groves, Kozena, Kwiecien, Focile, Allen
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 6:00 am , Sat Nov 26 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: October 2015

Annotation from October 2012

This revival had premiered in the fall with Frittoli making a
wonderful foil for Kozena, and Levine was at his considerable
Mozartean best. Deshorties, while not as stretched as she had been in
Entfuhrung is again cast beyond her capacity. Still, the overall
ensemble is of good quality and worthy of
a listen.

Verdi: La Forza del Destino   * Mon Nov 21 3:00 pm*  3/20/1954-Stiedry;
Milanov, Penno, Warren, Hines, Madeira, Pechner
*Rebroadcast: *Wed Nov 23 9:00 am , Fri Nov 25 6:00 pm , Sat Nov 26 9:00
pm

Last on Sirius: November 2015

Annotation from October 2012

Milanov's four broadcast Leonoras begin in 1952 with much of the above
cast except Tucker for Penno. That performance is on MOoD and there
are many fine moments. Penno is the point of interest in this week's
Forza, and clearly he must have had one of the largest tenor voices in
an era of big voiced singers. His Met career was not long, but he is
long remembered as well for several appearances with Callas-- Macbeth
and Medea. He is also the Pollione at the Met in Milanov's final
series of Normas. Milanov's Norma has not appeared in the Sirius
series, and while the 2 1940s performances will catch her in smoother
voice, I would love to hear the 1954 performance as well.

LIVE FROM THE MET Puccini: Manon Lescaut *Mon Nov. 21 8:00 pm *
Armiliato; Opolais, Alvarez, Maltman, Sherratt

*TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2016*

Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos *Tue Nov 22 12:00 am* 3/20/1993-Marin; Norman,
Moser, Swenson, Mentzer, Stewart, Oswald
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 12:00 pm , Sat Nov 26 6:00 am

Last on Sirius: December 2015 Available on MOoD
                                 Annotation from February 2013

For my money Jessye Norman is much better in her 2 earlier broadcasts
(the first with Andrew Davis conducting, the second with Levine and
subsequently telecast). Moser is not my preferred Bacchus, but Swenson
featuring more of a lyric Zerbinetta (a la Guden) is very fine.

Strauss: Salome Tue *Nov 22 6:00 am* 1/5/1974-Levine; Bumbry, Ulfung,
Resnik, Shadur, W. Lewis
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 3:00 pm Sun Nov 27 12:00 am ET

Last on Sirius: October 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from
February 2012

This is Levine's only Met run of Salome. Bumbry is in luscious voice,
but Shadur is below major house standard for Jokanaan.

Verdi: Don Carlo *Tue Nov 22 9:00 am* 3/5/1955-Adler; Tucker, Steber,
Bastianini, Thebom, Hines, Moscona
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: November 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from
November 2011

You don't want to hear Bastianini in his final 2 Met broadcasts (both
1965) of Forza del Destino and Don Carlo. Though his prime at the
Met (1953-1960) was short most of the 70+ performances at the Met
including 5 broadcasts are worth hearing for sampling one of the
premiere post-WW2 Italian baritone
voices. I've never heard his Traviata with Albanese from 1955, and
career listers speak with reverence about his Carlo Gerard from 1960;
certainly his CG with
Tebaldi and Del Monaco in the studio is a classic. Why didn't my aunt
take me to the opera a year earlier in Dallas to hear Tebaldi and
Bastianini in Traviata? I
still made it to opera lover starting a year later, but I think this
11 year old would have gotten the message. Until these appear,
Bastianini as well as Tucker in his final Don Carlo broadcast
(he went on to sing the part (at least 3 times in my presence and
quite successfully) for another 15 years.

Wagner: Gotterdammerung *Tue Nov 22 12:00 pm *4/24/2004-Levine; Eaglen,
West, Salminen, Held, Wray, Naef
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 9:00 pm , Sat Nov 26 9:00 am

Last on Sirius: September 2015

Annotation from August 2012

This is Eaglen's final Met appearance, although not so marked yet in
the database. Her 2000 broadcast is on MOoD with Stig Anderson and
Eric Halvarson and Felicity Palmer's Met debut as Waltraute. West was
always a solid singer for me and I will take a listen to see
how sounds vis a vis current competition, and Salminen is the standard
for Hagen. But don't expect too much from Eaglen. The tone had become
significantly compromised by the final round of her Met performances.

Verdi: Un Ballo in Maschera  *Tue Nov 22 6:00 pm*  12/14/1940-Panizza;
Bjorling, Milanov, Sved, Andreva, Castagna
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Nov 25 9:00 am Sun Nov 27 12:00 pm

Last on Sirius: October 2015

Annotation from October 2013

Neither Milanov nor Bjorling recorded these roles complete, let alone
together (Bjorling scheduled for two-- Toscanini and Solti). Panizza,
Milanov, and Bjorling all outstanding. It was widely available in
various private pressings. This is still 1940s sound and this week is
only the second appearance on Sirius. My guess is that this will
appear in the MOoD offerings shortly [ well we're two years later it
still is not in MOoD], as almost all the big box reissues on CD make
their way into MOoD.

Wagner: Der Fliegende Hollander  *Tue Nov 22 9:00 pm*  2/16/1963-Bohm;
London, Rysanek, Konya, Tozzi
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Nov 24 9:00 am Sun Nov 27 3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: September 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from
September 2012

This is a legendary partnership of Bohm with London and Rysanek. Bohm
and Rysanek are together for two later broadcasts in 1965 with David
Ward, and 1970 with William Dooley. Neither of those have been on
Sirius. This 1963 broadcast was swapped with Ariadne 2 weeks earlier
when the Hollander cast could not be assembled. That swap denied the
broadcast audience the chance to hear Della Casa's Ariadne. For my
money there is no Senta like
Rysanek. Read the Opera-L archives for my appreciation (I saw a tour
performance from the stage). Rysanek and London are certainly a
remarkable pair, and the
applause for their Act 2 duet (in the 3 act version) regularly seemed unending.

Janacek: Jenufa *Wed Nov 23 12:00 am* 1/25/2003-Jurowski; Mattila,
Polaski, Begley, Ventris, Nadler
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Nov 25 3:00 pm Sun Nov 27 6:00 am

Last on Sirius: February 2016

Annotation from June 2013

I was disappointed in this production when it was new in 2003, and
had seen Silja recently in Barcelona and found her inferior to Marton
who was almost as impressive as Rysanek had been as the Kostelnicka.
This is Mattila's second Jenufa broadcast, here first 4 years earlier
was with Polaski under Jurowski. Now that we are more aware of Jay
Hunter Morris, I will take another listen. Maybe I will be in a
better mood-- I do love Jenufa, but not every performance
automatically clicks. The Benackova/ Rysanek under Conlon in 1992
broadcast definitely "clicks!" Alas no Jenufa in MOoD.

Tchaikovsky: The Queen of Spades  *Wed Nov 23 6:00 am*  4/10/1999-Gergiev;
Domingo, Gorchakova, Soderstrom, Hvorostovsky, Borodina, Putilin
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Nov 25 12:00 pm Sun Nov 27 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: March 2016 Available on
MOoD Annotation from
October 2012

This performance is too late for Soderstrom, too late for Domingo, and
too late for Gorchakova. You can see the video from five days later
on MOoD as well. Better to hear the first season of the production
with Gregorian who succeeded Heppner, Guleghina who succeeded Mattila
with Rysanek. That has been on Sirius, but is not on MOoD. If Sirius
had been at work when the production premiered we would have a
broadcast of Heppner and Mattila at their very best.

Verdi: La Forza del Destino * Wed Nov 23 9:00 am*
3/20/1954-Stiedry; Milanov, Penno, Warren, Hines, Madeira, Pechner

Berg: Lulu *Wed Nov 23 12:00 pm* 4/2/1988-Levine; Malfitano, Mazura,
Troyanos, Hamilton, Foldi
*Rebroadcast: *Sat Nov 26 12:00 am

Last on Sirius:
                                    Annotation from September 2014

Lulu is not a regular item for me, but Mazura and Troyanos were
specialists, and Leighton Kerner, the late Village Voice critic found
her the most satisfying of 11 Lulus he had encountered. I don't find
Lulu a very good audio only encounter, and it's sad that the Dexter
production which was telecast with Migenes (replacing Stratas) has not
made its way to MetOperaonDemand, but is on a Met issued DVD in the
Levine 40th anniversary DVD box.

Rossini: Il Barbiere di Siviglia  *Thu Nov 24 12:00 am*  3/6/1954-Erede;
Merrill, Peters, Valletti, Corena, Siepi
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Nov 25 6:00 am Sun Nov 27 9:00 am

Last on Sirius: January 2016 Available on
MOoD Annotation from October 2012

This production was recorded by RCA with Leinsdorf for Erede, and
Tozzi for Siepi, but the rest of the cast intact. Merrill and Peters
are both very fine, but it is the three Italians who give performances
to savor. Corena was never in second tier with
his Bartolo, and the recitatives with Siepi absolutely magical. A
spirited ensemble and you can hear it in uncompressed sound on MOoD
any time you want. Highly
recommended.
