1. If I was one of those attending the interrupted Tell performance or scheduled to attend the cancelled Italiana in Algeri performance, I would be totally furious x 10 at what occurred.

2. The individual who perpetrated this outrage brings new depth of meaning to the terms "idiot", "numbskull", "simpleton", "fool", "jackass", "cretin", "moron", "imbecile", "ignoramus", "halfwit" and a hundred other pejoratives.

3. The above being said, Gelb's handling of the situation was the proper course of action to take. It is one thing for government authorities to initiate proceedings against the perpetrator should they choose to do so. It is another to give this story continuity by having the Met seek retribution on behalf of itself or its audience members. The Met's purpose is to present performances and not to act as an avenging angel. There are times when it is best to let things go rather than give a distasteful situation legs. Keeping this situation in the public eye by having the Met involved in civil or criminal proceedings extending for two or three years is not the way to go. The sooner that the Met can put this situation behind it and relegate it to the list of performance oddities that have occurred at the Met over the past 125 years the better. Let life move on.

Best from Boston.

Ray Gouin
