I just came from the Washington National Opera Studios where Renee Fleming gave a 2 hour master class followed by Q&A to a full house including the likes of Lawrence Brownlee and Andrew Stenson (who alternate as Tonio in Fille du Regiment next month) amongst so many other Washington opera glitterati.
We heard from baritone Hunter Enoch who wandered into the realm of Verdi with "O Carlo ascolta" from Don Carlos which proved he can manage this rep easily.
Following him was soprano Ariana Wehr who wowed with Lucia's "Regnava nel silencio...quando rapito in estasi..."
and last, but not least, came tenor Rexford Tester with Don Ottavio's "Il mio tesoro" which he will reprise in the YA concert version of Don Giovanni in March 2017!
All three sang beautifully and were encouraged and assisted by Ms. Fleming. There were not many funny moments or revelations, just simple technique.
Master classes can be loads of fun, and this was indeed most enjoyable, especially as we saw how the singers could indeed improve upon the already established good.
