Health statistics of chronic obesity is a matter of public record and much public
discussion. Obesity shortens lives, often dramatically. A few years ago, when the
VSO was looking for Botha to make a last minute substitution, they found him at
his favorite steak house. Botha had a variety of health issues typically related to
obesity. So did Pavarotti. Both careers were shortened by that. The percentage of
the American population overweight has created a major health issue and the
principal factor contributing to the crisis in public health financing. To dismiss it is
more than wrong, it is tragic.
