Friends, here is the annotated Sirius list for the coming week. My
apologies for the delay, but the new format is based on the Sirius playlist
and mounted on the Sirius website. Last week there was the mess of the
Falstaff title with a Faust cast from 1940. We ended up with the Terfel
Falstaff. The mystery opera this week is Le Nozze di Figaro which first
appears on Wednesday at 9 am. There is no clue as to which performance of
Figaro it will be. A rebroadcast of the Figaro appears on Friday October
7 at 6 PM and that leaves a third slot on Sunday October 9 at 3 pm which
is not yet confirmed as Figaro on the website. You need to stay tuned as
the Sunday listings do not appear until Monday (tomorrow). The two
current repertory operas being broadcast are Tristan und Isolde on Monday
night, October 3, and on Tuesday, October 4, L'Italiana in Algeri with
Mariana Pizzolato (cast listing replacement for Elizabeth de Shong) does
not show up on the Sirius page. There is still some confusion which I
have not been able to resolve about which performances feature both a
live feed from the Met's website (no subscription required but also
generally not available in your car) and from Sirius (which does require a
subscription ). The "new" monthly calendar is a mess and does not match
with what the Sirius website is showing (both Tristan and L'Italiana are on
the website. Anyone who can point me to the one in charge I would
appreciate. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the Met seems to be too busy
with other projects, and not tending to its "principal".

Happy listening,

rww

MONDAY OCTOBER 3, 2016

Verdi: Otello Mon Oct 3 6:00 am 2/9/1974- Levine; Vickers, Te Kanawa,
Stewart, Lewis
*Rebroadcast: *Wed Oct 5 12:00 pm , Fri Oct 7 9:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2015 Available on MetOperaonDemand (MOoD)
Annotation from August 2015

I was at this broadcast which was Te Kanawa's unscheduled debut (she
was to debut as Desdemona a few weeks later, but Stratas cancelled).
I have fond memories of both Vickers and TeKanawa in this
performance. Recent listening on MOoD raised my opinion of Stewart's
Iago.

Bizet: Carmen Mon Oct 3 9:00 am 3/22/1986- Levine; Ewing, Domingo,
Malfitano, Devlin
*Rebroadcast: *Wed Oct 5 9:00 pm , Sat Oct 8 3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: May 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from May 2015

This is the second of Domingo's three Jose broadcasts the first is
1971 with Ruza Baldani and Robert Merrill under Jean Morel which has
not been
rebroadcast on Sirius he also conducts a Carmen (not while singing
Jose) and also has a telecast with Waltraud Meier, available on MOoD.
Three days before the telecast is his
last matinee broadcast, also not rebroadcast on Sirius.

I was not a big fan of the Ewing Carmen, but for a change this is an
interesting cast despite thinking Domingo was always in Carmen, at
the
Met he was not-- his 26 rank well behind Martinelli at 74 , Tucker at
60, or even McCracken at 47; not far behind PD are Del Monaco and
Vickers at 18
each and Alagna at 20.

Wagner: Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg Mon Oct 3 12:00 pm 1/23/1993-
Levine; McIntyre, Mattila, Araiza, Prey, Rootering, Magnusson
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Oct 6 6:00 am , Sat Oct 8 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: October
2015
Annotation from February 2013

This is the year of the new production with a lot of fresh casting in
all the roles. McIntyre captured the character of Sachs very well
even if it was not the freshest vocally. The Met rebroadcasts
Meistersinger again in 1995 (which IS on MOoD) where Heppner replaces
Araiza (this Walther is Araiza's final appearance on the Met broadcast
airwaves), and Weikl replaces McIntyre. Mattila and
Prey are excellent on both broadcasts.

LIVE FROM THE MET: Wagner: Tristan und Isolde Mon Oct 3 6:25 pm LIVE FROM
THE MET; Rattle; Skelton, Stemme, Gubanova, Pape, Nikitin

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2016

Britten: Billy Budd Tue Oct 4 12:00 am 4/4/1992- Mackerras; Hampson, Clark,
Morris, Held, Courtney
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Oct 6 12:00 pm , Sat Oct 8 6:00 am

Last on Sirius: December 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from January 2012

Morris has sung almost every Claggart in the production and it is one
of his best parts. Hampson isn't always ideal as an innocent, but he's
a fine
musician and the cast under Mackerras is top drawer. There is also an
excellent Met video of the production with Dwayne Croft on MOoD.

Weber: Der Freischutz Tue Oct 4 6:00 am 4/15/1972- Ludwig; Konya,
Lorengar, Feldhoff, Mathis
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Oct 6 3:00 pm , Sun Oct 9 12:00 am

Last on Sirius: May 2016 Available on
MOoD Annotation from June 2013

This is the only Met broadcast of Freischutz, and despite some good
work from the treble/tenor clef, Ludwig's conducting does not give it
the sparkle it needs. Feldhoff is more adequate than commanding. One
cannot blame the Met entirely, this work simply is not as much a part
of the "standard" opera house repertoire as it was 50 years ago.

Boito: Mefistofele Tue Oct 4 9:00 am 2/19/2000- Elder; Ramey, Villarroel,
Margison
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Oct 6 6:00 pm , Sat Oct 8 12:00 am

Last on Sirius: May
2016
Annotation from June 2015

This is the Met's only broadcast of Mefistofele, so it's not so bad
that it gets two outings in a year. There's no other Mefistofele on
the shelf. When this was broadcast, Ramey was in prime voice, but the
tenor and soprano leads were just OK. These days, the basso ranks are
even more depleted than 13 years ago, but lots of interesting tenors
and sopranos for these two roles. Calleja would be my first choice for
Faust, but there are others who could do fine work, including Fabiano.
Radvanovsky would be a most interesting combo Margerita/Helen and the
Met chorus is several cuts above their work a dozen years ago. I'm
not wild about the Carsen production, but a rumored revival seems to
have disappeared. Mefistofele is not represented in MOoD and should
be available there, starting with capturing prime Ramey.

Bellini: La Sonnambula Tue Oct 4 12:00 pm 12/21/1968- Bonynge; Sutherland,
Alexander, Giaiotti, Boky
*Rebroadcast: *Thu Oct 6 9:00 pm , Sat Oct 8 9:00 am

Last on Sirius: January 2016 Available on
MOoD Annotation from September 2013

This is Sutherland's second Sonnambula broadcast and well equal to
the 1963 supporting cast for Sutherland of Gedda and Flagello; Both
of Sutherland's Amina broadcasts are on MOoD.

Puccini: La Boheme Tue Oct 4 3:00 pm 12/24/1977- Conlon; Scotto, Morell,
Mitchell, Wixell, Plishka
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Oct 7 12:00 am , Sat Oct 8 12:00 pm

Last on Sirius October
2014
Annotation from October 2014 updated

Scotto partners Domingo, Shicoff, and Aragall in earlier performances
of this run. Aragall may have skipped out because it was Christmas
eve, but the previous Boheme on the 19th marks his farewell to the Met
(38 performances over 12 years)? The main distinction is Mitchell's
Musetta in her only run of the part. There are worse Boheme casts, and
interesting that Conlon is still around today, though mostly in Los
Angeles these days. Conlon's Met service to date spans 39 years and
280 performances, most recently last season's revival of
Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth
of the Mtensk District with Eva Maria Westbroek.
for it.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2016

Gluck: Orfeo Ed Euridice Wed Oct 5 12:00 am 1/9/1971- Bonynge; Bumbry,
Tucci, Peters
*Rebroadcast: *Wed Oct 5 3:00 pm , Fri Oct 7 6:00 am , Sun Oct 9 9:00 am

Last on Sirius: January
2016
Annotation from November 2013

This is the premiere cast in a Rolf Gerard production (so out of
ideas), but Bumbry is in luscious voice, if not your standard issue
Orfeo. Why oh why is her effort not in MOoD?

Wagner: Tannhauser Wed Oct 5 6:00 am 12/17/1960- Solti; Hopf, Rysanek,
Dalis, Prey, Hines
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Oct 7 12:00 pm , Sun Oct 9 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from July 2014

This is the first Tannhauser of the season and marks the house debuts
of both Prey and Solti. Hopf is not for everyone, but this is a
thrilling broadcast with fine work from all, and first appearance of
the Paris version of Tannhauser, which Levine continued when the new
production debuted in 1977. 1965-66 is the only season with the
Dresden version after 1954-55.

Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro Wed Oct 5 9:00 am The Sirius listing
gives the opera only with no performance or cast.

Verdi: Otello Wed Oct 5 12:00 pm 2/9/1974- Levine; Vickers, Te
Kanawa, Stewart, Lewis

Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice  Wed Oct 5 3:00 pm   1/9/1971- Bonynge;
Bumbry, Tucci, Peters

Verdi: Aida Wed Oct 5 6:00 pm 3/11/1950- Cooper; Welitsch, Vinay, Harshaw,
Merrill, Hines, Alvary
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Oct 7 9:00 am , Sun Oct 9 12:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2015 Available on MOoD
                                       Annotation from June 2014

According to my records this is new to Sirius [ in 2013]. It may have
been broadcast in the first three years of Sirius when I wasn't doing
the playlists.
I've heard this performance, and Welitsch has some powerful moments,
and a pleasure to hear early Merrill in this role. He is the Met
champion Amonasro with 72 (MacNeil is 71, and Amato 70)

Bizet: Carmen Wed Oct 5 9:00 pm 3/22/1986- Levine; Ewing,
Domingo, Malfitano, Devlin

Massenet: Manon Thu Oct 6 12:00 am 12/21/1963- Schippers; Moffo, Gedda,
Guarrera
*Rebroadcast: *Fri Oct 7 3:00 pm , Sun Oct 9 6:00 am

Last on Sirius: October 2015 Available on
MOoD Annotation from October 2015

I saw Moffo and Gedda in this new production on the Met tour in Dallas
(spring 1964.) She was very beautiful, but made no impact. Once you've
heard the De Los Angeles/Monteux recording, THERE is Manon.

There is a 1959 broadcast with Gedda and De Los Angeles which has
never appeared on Sirius ( she does have a 1954 with Valletti which
is very fine
and has been on), but let us have more Jean Morel in the pit.
