Friends, The listing below identifies rebroadcasts as well as the
three live broadcasts from the current season-- Opening night Tristan on
Monday, Tuesday Don Giovanni, and Wednesday La Boheme. The 1962
Gotterdammerung and 1985 Contes d'Hoffmann are the only archival programs
of much interest. The new arrangement still takes an hour longer than
the old Met listing for me to repackage. The Tristan (early start 5 PM) is
the only major point of interest.

Wagner: Der Fliegende HolländerMon Sep 26 6:00 am 12/30/1950- Reiner;
Hotter, Varnay, Svanholm, Nilsson*Rebroadcast: *Thu Sep 29 12:00 pm, Sat
Oct 1 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2016 Available on MetOpera on
Demand (MOoD) Annotation from May 2014 updated

Only two months since the last rotation? A bit of chaos in current Sirius
programming. This performance is also in the Met's bicentenary Wagner CD
box from Sony. Reiner, Hotter, and Varnay are experienced Wagnerians, but
this

is one Wagner opera better served by the historic
partnership a decade later of Schippers / Bohm, London, and Rysanek
(and Tozzi too).

Saint-Saens: Samson et DalilaMon Sep 26 9:00 am 12/26/1964- Pretre; Thomas,
Dalis, Bacquier*Rebroadcast: *Thu Sep 29 3:00 pm , Sat Oct 1 9:00 pm

Last on Sirius: October 2015
                                                       Annotation from
October 2015

This is the broadcast from the first season of the new
production; Gorr had premiered the production triumphantly (I was
there), but the two debutants
Bacquier and Pretre were also of high quality. Thomas
despite cutting a nice stage figure really wasn't up to such rarefied
company. Dalis is in
very good voice, and the high point is her duet with
Bacquier. My ears may be playing a trick, but I think even Bacquier
has a start when she delivers
her final words in the duet. Pretre's long career has
ended up being mostly at La Scala, but when it came to the Saint-Saens
score, he had no
superiors. Dalis is the subject of a new biography by
Linda Riebel which focuses on Dalis' role in the founding of Opera San
Jose. Her major Met career is not omitted.

Donizetti: L'Elisir D'AmoreMon Sep 26 12:00 pm 1/21/1995- Muller; Hadley,
Swenson, Plishka, Oswald*Rebroadcast: *Thu Sep 29 6:00 pm Sun Oct 2
12:00 am

Last on Sirius: May 2015
                                                        Annotation from
February 2011

I did not write a review of this performance, and I'm not
sure why. I have no memory of this performance, so I'd better take a
listen. While this performance has not been played to
death, I think L'elisir is getting played with the
frequency of Puccini which I don't think it can support.

Opening Night Gala: Tristan und IsoldeMon Sep 26 4:30 pm LIVE FROM THE MET:

Mozart: Cosi Fan TutteTue Sep 27 12:00 am 2/24/2001- Summers; Diener,
Groves, Graham, Gilfry, Upshaw, Petrusi*Rebroadcast: *Thu Sep 29 6:00 am
, Sat Oct 1 12:00 pm
Last on Sirius: September 2015
                                                  Annotation from August
2014
I only heard portions of this broadcast, where I thought Diener was a better
than average Fiordiligi, and very good work from Susan Graham, though she
appears 4years earlier with Vaness and Isepp conducting a

more interesting supporting cast- Marie McLaughlin,
Richard Croft, Nathan Gunn, and William Shimell.

Verdi: MacbethTue Sep 27 6:00 am 1/28/1984- Levine; Milnes, Scotto,
Plishka, Ciannella*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 12:00 am , Sat Oct 1 3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: November 2015
                                                Annotation from October 2012

This is the second season of the infamous Peter Hall
Macbeth. The first season broadcast also with Levine, Scotto, Milnes
and Plishka
is available on (MOoD). Generally with Scotto, earlier is
better. This part, despite many insightful line readings, is simply
not for her.

Bellini: NormaTue Sep 27 9:00 am 12/19/1970- Bonynge; Sutherland, Horne,
Tagliavini, Plishka*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 6:00 pm Sun Oct 2 12:00 pm
 Last on Sirius: April 2016
                                                       Annotation from
 November 2013

This is Sutherland/Horne in their second season of Norma
(but same calendar year) with the men above instead of Bergonzi and
Siepi. I
prefer the excitement of the first season, but the ladies
remain the gold standard in both.

Verdi: RigolettoTue Sep 27 12:00 pm 2/24/1990- Panni; Nucci, Anderson,
Pavarotti, Furlanetto, Svenden, Held*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 6:00 am
      Sun
Oct 2 6:00 pm

Last on Sirius: June 2015 Available on MOoD
                                      Annotation from November 2012

This performance was of the new Otto Schenk production,
catching both Anderson and Pavarotti in particularly good voice.
Held is a solid
Monterone (Sirius does not list, but I find it a very
important, if short role).

Offenbach: Les Contes D'HoffmannTue Sep 27 3:00 pm 1/26/1985- Rudel; Kraus,
Malfitano, Morris, Bybee*Rebroadcast: *Thu Sep 29 9:00 am

Last on Sirius: September 2015
                                                Annotation from June 2011

I always liked Kraus in the title role, and though
Domingo, Shicoff, Gedda, and Tucker all have trumps to play, Kraus
cedes nothing to
them in terms of style. Malfitano does all the heroines,
and in 1985 she was within hailing distance of doing that respectably.
I'll be taking a listen
to see how my memory has been. Morris also appears to
good effect 3 years later in a Met video with Shicoff. Rudel, after a
lengthy association with the New
York City Opera is the 2nd leading Met conductor of
Hoffmann with 37 (Hasselmanns runs up 40 performances in the 20s)

LIVE FROM THE MET: Don GiovanniTue Sep 27 7:25 pm LIVE FROM THE MET: Luisi;

Beethoven: FidelioWed Sep 28 12:00 am 1/6/2001- Levine; Mattila, Heppner,
Leiferkus, Pape, Hong*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 9:00 am Sun Oct 2
3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: August 2015 Available on MOoD
                        Annotation from November 2012 updated

This new production was telecast earlier in the season,
but this audio (both audio and video are in MOoD) replaces Struckmann
with Leiferkus,
Welch-Babidge with Hong, and Lloyd with James Morris.
Mattila and Heppner are both very good, but below the transcendant
Fidelios I remember from Nilsson, Rysanek and Marton in the theater
all with the inimitable Jon Vickers as Florestan. Flagstad makes her
mark in two Met broadcasts as well.

Meyerbeer: Le PropheteWed Sep 28 6:00 am 1/29/1977- Lewis; McCracken,
Scotto, Horne, Hines*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 12:00 pm

Last on Sirius : April 2016 Available on MOoD
                              Annotation from November 2015

Though this is the only broadcast of Prophete from the
Met, I find the work of little interest. The big name singers work
hard, but Lewis is
not the man to make the work seem better than it is. The
second season is in the opening weeks under Charles Mackerras
(typically a
much higher profile conductor), but not broadcast. In
the current environment we would have had one and possibly two
offerings with new casting of both Berthe (Rita Shane) and Jean
(Chauvet)

Mascagni & Leoncavallo:Cavalleria Rusticana / PagliacciWed Sep 28 9:00
am 1/18/1975-
Nelson; Bumbry, Theyard, Colzani/Moffo, McCracken, Milnes*Rebroadcast: *Fri
Sep 30 3:00 pm

Last on Sirius: July 2015
                                             Annotation from July 2013

An interesting afternoon. Bumbry is a solid Santuzza,
if not as authentic as Cossotto. The Pagliacci features Moffo's
Met broadcast farewell, and not on a high note.
McCracken is a firm number 3 in the Canio sweepstakes following
Caruso (116) , and
Martinelli (68) with 57 performances. Though he
continues in the part through his final season of 1985-1986, this is
his last broadcast Canio.

Wagner: GotterdammerungWed Sep 28 12:00 pm 1/27/1962- Leinsdorf; Nilsson,
Hopf, Frick, Mittelmann, Kuchta, Dalis*Rebroadcast: *Fri Sep 30 9:00 pm
    Sun Oct 2 6:00 am

Last on Sirius: July 2015 Available on MOoD
                              Annotation from March 2011

Happy to see this on the schedule again. It's from
Nilsson's first Met broadcast cycle, and the Norns and Rhinemaidens
are unusually
strong : As was common in those days, Dalis doubles as
Second Norn as well as the featured Waltraute, and Arroyo is both the
Third Norn and Woglinde. Jean Madeira,
Rosalind Elias, and Mignon Dunn complete the two trios.
In terms of historic broadcasts the Marjorie Lawrence 1936
Gotterdammerung with Melchior has been on Sirius and IS
             available on MOoD. Traubel's 1951 and 1952
Gotterdammerung under Stiedry with Svanholm (good) and Ernster
(probably not so good) have not been broadcast.
This is the end of Traubel's Met work, but a notable
voice, and they should be heard. The 1963 broadcast with Nilsson was
originally to have been with
Reiner but he withdrew during rehearsals, but not before
a number of cuts were made (and the Met database thankfully nowhere
has the word uncut attached to)
them. The 1974 performance which has NOT been on
Sirius, but should be features Rita Hunter, Helge Brilioth under
Kubelik, I think his
only broadcast outing anywhere of the finale of the Ring.

                                      Annotation from September 2015

I love Corena's Bartolo ( he has 10 broadcasts!!! pick
another) , but this is no star outing from the Met which has many fine
Barbieres. There are other ways to honor Rosalind Elias.

The exact same cast broadcast Lulu a year later on April
20, 2002. I'm not a Lulu connoisseur, but except for Courtney all
the principals are major interpreters of their roles.

Most of the recent broadcasts had
been of the 2002 performance.
