I should also mention that Washington Concert Opera under Antony Walker is doing LEONORE with Marjorie Owens on  March 4 this coming Spring. Simon O'Neill, Alan Held and Celena Shafer are the other announced cast members.

The Met is doing Fidelio this season! Wow, David - great I do see it listed. Was that a last minute change? Was it in their first announcement? (If so I completely missed it)
That's good news and thanks for straightening me out about it.

Hi James--
As Kenneth Bleeth wrote, Leonore was one of Callas' early roles in Greece ( with Santuzza and Marta in TIEFLAND) and one doubts her later problems with the upper register had any ill effect whatsoever.

Somehow, I managed to see FIDELIO at San Francisco Orchestra last June, with Nina Stemme; in Sarasota in this March ( with Kara Shay Thomson, who was excellent);  my cousins in Louisville saw Thomson in it the previous season; I saw it again at Caramoor last weekend with Elza van den Heever; and the Met is doing it this season with Adrianne Pieckzonka.
I see there were also these US performances:Aug 14 Santa Fe Opera w/Alex Penda
Oct 15 Opera CharlotteJun 16 Cincinnati Opera w/Christine Goerke
So FIDELIO-- never as frequent an offering as CARMEN or BUTTERFLY--has not in fact vanished from US stages.
Long may it wave - David

Callas as Leonore! OMG what a terrible thought. It is a role that demande=d= exactly what she didn't have, strength and most especially security in the
upper register. Netrebko as Leonore, I'd love to see her do it, what a
thrill that would be for me, but I don't see it for her. And alas, almost=
no one in the US at least, is doing Fidelio anymore -- at least the Princeton
Festival is doing it next June :)
