Here's a review by Nino Pantano of the May 1st 2010 Presentation by 
Gateweay Classical Musical Society with Mstro. Ida Angland of Opera 
Highlights.  Enjoy, GV

Maestra Ida Angland and Gateway Classical Music Society Presents Opera 
Highlights ---  A Review by Nino Pantano

The Gateway Classical Music Society presented a program of Opera Highlights 
that proved to be populist in its concept, a revelation in its unfolding and a 
treasured afternoon in its realty. The inspiration of the vision that became a 
joyous event is founder, music director and conductor Maestra Ida Angland.

The venue for the concert of Saturday May 1st was Holy Trinity Roman 
Catholic Church on West 82nd St. in New York City with its brilliant illuminated 
sacred windows rivaling those at the cathedral at Chartres and a large austere 
overhead cross suitable for Scarpia.

The opening salvo was one of my favorites, the overture to Die Fledermaus by 
Johann Strauss which was conducted with authority and spirit by Maestra 
Angland and truly started the musical journey on a festive note.

Soprano Vania Chan sang a lilting and charming “Durch Zartlichkeit und 
Schmeicheln” “with tenderness and coaxing” aria from Mozart’s The Abduction 
from the Seraglio in fluent German.

This was followed by Vogliatemi bene,” the rhapsodic love duet from Puccini’s 
Madama Butterfly with tenor Mauricio O’Reilly  as Pinkerton and soprano 
Christina Rohm as 
Cio Cio San, who gave the audience a visceral thrill with their lush and 
powerful singing.

Another golden oldie was “Meditation” from Massenet’s Thais that was made 
fresh and new by the sensitive nuanced virtuoso playing of violinist Nicholas 
Szucs. Margery Fitts harp accompaniment added greatly to the spiritual mood.

Baritone Ricardo Rosa sang a robust “Largo al factotum” from Rossini’s Barber 
of Seville. Rosa’s full round sound and generous top evoked memories of the 
famed Robert Weede.

Christina Rohm was the reflective Marschallin, Sandra Schwarzhaupt a sensual 
Octavian and Jacqueline Goldgorin, a silver voiced Sophie in “Marie Therese! 
Hab mir’s gelopt” from Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. An operatic trio in 
a perfect blend.

Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci was well served with the sensual duet of Nedda and 
Silvio, “Non mi ten rar…E allor perche,” Ricardo Rosa and Christina Rohm sang 
with rapture.

This was followed by a riveting and gripping “Vesti la giubba” sung by Mauricio 
O’Reilly who revealed an impressive upper register. 

The first part of the program ended with the spirited “Libiamo” from Verdi’s La 
Traviata   sung with brio by Nicholas Simpson as Alfredo, Jacqueline Goldgorin 
as Violetta,  Joan Marie Peitscher as Flora and Gregory Scott as Gaston 
accompanied by the splendid Gateway Chorus.

The second part of the program began with a thrilling rendering of the 
overture to Verdi’s La forza del destino by Maestra Ida Angland and the 
Gateway Orchestra. The echo in the church gave a hauntingly stereophonic 
quality to this great piece, a roller coaster ride of Verdian melody.

Mauricio O’Reilly then captivated us with a stentorian “Nessun dorma” making 
one desire to see him as Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot.

Bass baritone Eric Keller sang a vocally compelling and humorous “Non piu 
andrai” from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro.

The Rigoletto Quartet followed with Jacqueline Goldgorin as Gilda, Sandra 
Schwarzhaupt as Maddelena, Ricardo Rosa as Rigoletto and ringing tenor 
Benjamin Sloman as the Duke.

Time and space do not allow for a more insightful review of violinist Nicholas 
Szucs’s spectacular playing with the Gateway Orchestra of the introduction 
and Habanera from the Carmen Fantasy by Sarasate.  Szucs’s virtuosity 
combined with a natural flair made for absolute magic in a dazzling display of 
style, substance and showmanship!

The last act trio from Madama Butterfly followed with strong performances by 
tenor Benjamin Sloman who’s remorseful “Addio” was impassioned with Ricardo 
Rosa, a sympathetic Sharpless and Joan Marie Peitscher as the saddened 

Vania Chan sang the Doll song from Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann with 
amusing robot like mechanical movements and dazzled us with her coloratura 

Christina Rohm and Sandra Schwarzhaupt were a perfect blend in the famed 

The scene and sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor offered a delicious dollop of 
Donizetti and  featured  Susan Lochner as Lucia, Mauricio O’Reilly as Edgardo, 
Sandra Schwarzhaupt as Alicia, Ricardo Rosa as Enrico, Eric Keller as Raimondo 
and Gregory Spock as Arturo and made for a rousing finale.

The audience stood and cheered the soloists, chorus and superb Gateway 
Orchestra of nearly sixty superb musicians. Bravo also to concertmaster Gino 
Sambuco. Lastly, Ms. Angland throughout the evening captured the essence 
and core of every composer and inspired the musicians and audience to enter 
the portals of paradise. Maestra Ida Angland deserves our gratitude for her 
prodigious efforts to give beauty to our world and allowing us to accompany
