Why does every tenor have to be, hopefully, an Otello?
May this one hold out at least as long as Bergonzi did.

I'd rather see him as Hermann in Pique Dame, as Werther, or
Andrea Chenier, or Dick Johnson.

Subject: Jonas Kaufmann as Don Jose

Listening to last night's Carmen on Sirius, I thought that
Jonas
Kaufmann was the finest Don Jose I have heard, live or on
disc, since I
heard Placido Domingo in the role at the Met in 1976 (with
Regine
Crespin as his Carmen). And Kaufmann's french was better
than
Domingo's. Thirty-three years is a long time to wait to
hear the part
sung to near-perfection, but it was worth the wait. (Alagna
I found
good but not more than that.) I envy those who saw Kaufmann
live.
Judging from the excerpts on youtube from another
production, his
portrayal of Don Jose is a powerful one.

I also agree with an earlier post that Alvaro in Forza would
be another
ideal role for him, another part that I have not heard sung
well since
Domingo in his (younger) prime. If Kaufmann takes proper
care of his
voice, with that baritonal core and those ringing top notes,
he could be
our next great Otello.

Kaufmann is 41 and therefore entering what should be his
prime as a
spinto tenor. Long may he sing!
