Greetings to all listers
May I add something to Ed's praise of Nello Santi ?
A friend of mine was at the "academy" at the Zurich opera a few years ago
and sang in several dozen performances at the opera house itself. Many of
them were conducted by Santi. He told me that in rehearsal Santi would sing
any part if a singer were absent for any reason, whilst also conducting the
rehearsal. His knowledge of scores is legendary..not surprising perhaps
since he has been conducting them for much more than half a century. Still,
you might think the memory might falter, but apparently not.
There are tv filmed sequences of this rehearsal style available, in some
people's collections.
Singers revere Santi for his attitude to them, and his knowledge of and
sensitivity to the score. He has been described on occasion on this list as a
"routinier". Nothing could be further from the truth and those who
describe him as such betray their lack of knowledge. He seems to be the last of
the old-fashioned great Italian Maestros.
Regards to all
Roger D Bell
