I attended opening night of the Austin Lyric Opera production of Poulenc's Dialogues of the
Carmelites last night at the new Long Center for the Performing Arts. I had been given a
ticket in the center of the orchestra, third row - just where I like to be. It was a 'really big
show.' The production was very effective, completely traditional and in service to Poulenc.
The singing ranged from good to excellent. Emily Pulley was excellent; the orchestra
fabulous. My only previous encounter with the opera was in the early 80's in San Francisco,
with Regine Crespin, Carol Vaness and Leontyne Price - I am embarrassed to confess that I
left at the intermission; the only thing that made an impression that night was Price (love
that girl!) and most of her part is in the second half. I hope that I can get back to one of the
3 remaining performances. When I first read that ALO was presenting this challenging opera
I was very surprised. They did themselves proud! And so did the audience which showed
more lasting power than I did 25 yrs ago.
