Well, Lemeshev  (whose name the French transliterate as "Lemiecheff") *did* record 
"Prosti, nebesnoe sozdanie" from Act One, and thrillingly-- but a studio recording of one 
aria is a very different matter than doing a role onstage.

Let's not forget Zurab Anjaparidze (of the Khaikhin recording with the young Tamara 
Milashkina) among exciting Ghermanns of the Soviet era. Why is that performance not 
readily available on CD?
