I don't disagree that Gramophone magazine (despite the usual comments of our US friends) is an eminent publications, but like all these lists and surveys this one is about 20% valid and 80% a way to fill up pages. Frankly any list of orchestras that ranks the Saito Kinen Orchestra and the Mariinsky Orchestra above the Philadelphia Orchestra, let alone a number of very fine European bands like the WDR Cologne, Gothenburg Symphony, Orchestre de Paris etc is marked already as somewhat pointless. And this is without even considering the most significant point which is that the level of even the finest orchestra can vary wildly depending on who is standing in front of it. The Vienna Phil can play like a scratch pit band in tedious repertoire under an uninspiring conductor.
