text/plain (25 lines)

Just now, Meastro Valery Gergiev, principal conductor of the Metropolitan
Opera, is conducting his Kirov-Mariinsky orchestra in Tskhinvali, among the
ruins of the capital of South Ossetia with his orchestra arrayed in front
of a public building that appears to have suffered damage with chards of
glass swept away in the background. The concert, it was said, was to
commemorate the loss of over 2,000 Ossetian lives after the Georgian
attack...Maestro Gergiev is an Ossetian.

Dan Kessler

P.S. On the Georgian side, the town of Gori, Josef Stalin's home town
seems to have survived unscathed...with his statue still intact as it
adorns a public square. We are reminded that It was Stalin who forced the
Ossetians into an artificial union with Georgia.
