Thought that opera lovers would like to know that PBS just added their
web compendium with essays and articles and a list of musical
selections featured in the upcoming PBS Tribute to Beverly Sills. My
only hesitation is the choice of host, Barbara Walters; bit hard to
swallow! When has she ever done anything on PBS? Below is the list
of musical selections. There are some extraordinary selections, many
which will capture Beverly Sills at her peak in the 1960's, such as the
Cleopatra, Zerbinetta, and Lucia. Unfortunately, many of her telecasts
of her greatest roles, Traviata, Manon, and Roberto Devereux, were
after 1974. which was after the cancer struck, which adversely affected
her voice. Who ever made the programming decision to have this
special tribute only air on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, at 9:00 P.M.,
should become part of a Thanksgiving feast! ;-) Let's hope that we will
not only see snippets, but that at least a few selections will be
complete.

MUSICAL SELECTIONS FOR BEVERLY SILLS: MADE IN USA on PBS,

*****
For many of us who are too young to have seen Beverly Sills'
eloquently beautiful artistry at her peak, I am hoping that this tribute
will be worthy of one of the truly great artists of the operatic and concert
stage, and also for one who has worked tirelessly for keeping
classical music a central focus of the culture in the U.S.

Warm Regards to Opera Lovers,

Jerry Waldman
