I suspect it's more a case of language preferences more than anything  else.
Steber made a wonderful Elsa, Tibbett was a great Wolfram, Vickers  of course
sang many roles in both languages, Talvela and Domingo also.  And  most
recently Bryn Terfel has been increasing his Wagnerian roles.

The germanic speaking seem to be willing to tackle the Italian  repertoire,
but the Italians are less likely to sing the German works.  And  this goes for
all German operas, Strauss, Mozart, Humperdinck, etc., too -  not just Wagner.
