Matinee Carmen...Graves, Giordani, Swenson and Schrott..
Ms. Graves has added a number of new pieces to her Carmen since I first
attended a
few weeks ago. She is much more energetic; her physical and musical
seductions
are more definitive. Good performance! Ruth Ann Swenson was, I thought,
a weak
Micaela; her voice showed the beginnings of a beat. Schrott was an
attractive
Escamillo once again, and Mr. Giordani gave a well-crafted and sung
rendition
of Don Jose. If only he could find some charisma for his stage work;
maybe
that is a quality that is either there or not.

Rigoletto...with the new hot love couple, Villazon and Nebtrebko.
Remember those reviews of their Salzburg Traviatas? The emphasis was on
the
acting, with occasional vocal deficiencies...Villazon, especially in the
first act,
sang appallingly. Poor diction, no legato, weak intonation. He redeemed
himself
with Parmi Veder...in the second act. He is a bumptious Duke! And this
role
is probably not for him. Anna N. was most appealing, her reputation
seems
justified. Guelfi never stood a chance here, and his voice is not right
for the
part -- at least at the Met.
