Der Rosenkavalier, of course, is a paradise of nuance in terms both of
differing accents employed by the characters (there are at least five)
and changing modes of expression (some apparently the invention of
Hofmannsthal himself), which were used to build up layers of patina for
the portrait of the Vienna of Maria Theresa .
