Los Angeles: "Not the Place for Opera"

Hmm. The interesting proposition of an Opera-L contributor. Let's see. The 2004/2005 season includes 91 performances of complete operas (many with some really stellar casts) and a few recitals. That's quite a few events for a cultural wasteland full of dunderheads and evil ignorant critics who freely speak their minds just as if they belonged to this list or something. I'll spare you the grinning emoticon.

The operas:
A Little Night Music
Recital: Bryn Terfel
Idomeneo
Ariadne auf Naxos
Carmen
La boh?me
Vanessa
Recital: Ren?e Fleming
Aida
Rom?o et Juliette
Recital: Susan Graham
Falstaff
Der Rosenkavalier

Somehow they just muddle through without the Met.
