This topic was covered by David Littlejohn in an essay titled, "The
Difference Is They Sing" published in his book of essays "The Ultimate Art
(Essays Around and About Opera)", University of California Press, 1992.

The following is an excerpt from the book, pages 20 - 24 of the paperback
edition, 1994. Although the information is now over 10 years old it is
probably still valid today. I love this book dearly and heartily recommend
it to listers.

"" What follows is a list of the 100 works most often performed by
professional opera companies and festivals around the world in the calendar
years 1988 and 1989, compiled by means of an arbitrary (and inherently
flawed) tallying process. The titles I give first-which are the titles I'll
be using throughout this book-are those colloquially used in the United
States and Britain. Sometimes we tend to translate (The Flying Dutchman, The
Marriage of Figaro); other times (Die Fledermaus, Cosi fan tutte) we don't.

6. Works generally thought of as "light operas," "operettas," or "musicals"
I have identified by asterisks. Although I am writing in this book primarily
about the nonasterisked sort of work, this list is intended to suggest the
actual nature of the current repertory of opera companies around the
world-which includes works one may not normally think of as "operas." It may
soon, for economic reasons, come to include more.
