Ahhh! What a satisfying afternoon with the absolutely stunning music of
Tchaikovsky as rendered by the incomparable Netrebko at her best,
coupled with a very fine Mattei and a shockingly touching performance
from new-to-me tenor Dolgov as Lenski, whose depth of acting was so
sincere he actually had me blubbering like a baby.
His "kuda kuda" was heart-rending. The duel scene was so tragic with the
two of them being thrown in a place they really didn't want to be but didn't
know how to get out of it.
They only nitpick (definitely a small thing but annoying because it was such
an easy thing to fix) was that her husband Gremin looked as young as
Onegin. Shouldn't the man have at least had a few gray hairs instead of
sleek black? Didn't make sense.
A fulfilling day with special kudos to the new and expressive conductor
Robin Ticciati, whose passion and enthusiasm was a pleasure to behold.
(His demeanor and looks are very reminiscent of Gustavo Dudamel)
